Last year, as the 20th Anniversary of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice approached, it was my privilege to announce some exciting plans for this special year. I am thrilled by our progress toward meeting our goals.
First, we planned to launch the celebration of TLPJ’s two decades of fighting for public justice by bringing together new members and longtime supporters at TLPJ’s Presidents’ Party. The entire event and all of our related activities could hardly have been more successful. See page 18 of the Spring 2002 issue of our Public Justice newsletter.
Second, we agreed to try to enhance TLPJ’s public interest impact by creating three fellowships for new lawyers to work at TLPJ. Remarkably, we have done that. With the generous support of TLPJ stalwarts Joe Power, Joe Cotchett, Fred Baron, Al Brayton, Jeff Goldberg, and Harry Deitzler, we now have two rotating fellowships at our National Headquarters and

one at our West Coast office. I am grateful to them all. See page 20 of the Spring 2002 newsletter.
Third, we created a 20th Anniversary Wall of Honor to spur special gifts and help achieve our goal of increasing our membership by at least 20%. Already, 15 benevolent backers have made special gift pledges of $20,000 or more and, with the stunning success of Super Thursday in Chicago, we are well on our way to our 20% target. In one day, we recruited or renewed over 900 members – the most successful membership campaign in TLPJ’s history! See page 21 of the Spring 2002 newsletter.
Finally, we planned to expand our Communications and Outreach activities in several respects, especially through electronic means. I am extremely proud that, on May 1, 2002, we unveiled our new web site, which offers unique interactive resources to all public interest advocates. In addition to providing access to key legal briefs and detailed information about TLPJ’s cutting-edge activities, TLPJ’s new web site is the only place on the World Wide Web that has a free, searchable database of thousands of contacts and resources for trial lawyers and other public interest advocates nationwide, searchable by 35 different focus areas. See page 12 of the Spring 2002 newsletter. So check out and bookmark www.tlpj.org today.
This is only the beginning. With your continued support, TLPJ will enter its third decade of public justice stronger than ever before. Please plan now to join me in Atlanta for a spectacular 20th Anniversary gala on Tuesday, July 23, 2002. We truly have something to celebrate!
